Karen Wohlafka has participated in Group Reformer, Stretchlates and Foot Strap Focus at TerraLuna and we'd like to get to know her a bit better!
Would you share with us your Pilates story and how long you've been practicing Pilates?
In November of 2020 my dear friend Lynelle convinced me to come to an open house at a Pilates studio where I could take a 20 minute reformer "teaser" class. I enjoyed the class so much I signed up and started taking classes regularly. I wanted an exercise routine I could fit into my busy schedule and would not make me so sore the next day I couldn't move, or set off a fibromyalgia flare. Pilates has helped me lose 25 lbs, increase my strength, and keep my fibromyalgia well controlled - plus I have fun!
What is an activity which was difficult for you in the beginning but is now easier?
Bicep curls were so hard for me to start - I told my instructors I had "wimpy" arms. Planks were so hard I think I stayed up for about 15 seconds max my first time.
Do you have an activity that you currently struggle with? If so, what are the challenge that you experience?
I still struggle with all things oblique - I really struggle to isolate those specific muscles. I also struggle with C-curve - mostly because it's hard to keep it out of my neck.
Tell us about props! Favorite and least favorite.
I loathe the squishy ball - I think mostly because you can't keep a hold of it without squeezing it, which is hard. I like the spiky ball and the pole.
If you had a "Signature Activity" what would it be?
Probably the oblique dip? I love chest expansions too.
Do you have a goal you'd like to share with us or perhaps a little-known fact about you?
I would like to maintain my weight loss - maybe lose a bit more. I love getting stronger so I can always improve there,
I'm the lead singer in an Irish Pub Band called FinTan
Do you have words of wisdom to share with other Guests? (This can be general life philosophy, not necessarily something relating to Pilates!)
One day at a time.
Finally, what is one food/drink/item you cannot live without?
Pickles! I go through several jars a month.
Thank you Karen, for sharing a bit about yourself and your Pilates journey!
